Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions, Answered

How should I prepare for my massage?

(1) Hydrate before and after an appointment. Being well hydrated before your massage is very important for the elimination of toxins that are released into the body’s circulation during treatment. Drinking water or herbal teas are excellent methods for staying hydrated. Avoid regular tea, coffee, alcohol, or any other stimulants. (2) Take a hot shower. A massage is a hands-on treatment during which your therapist massages your muscles as well as your skin. Therefore, there’s nothing better than feeling clean before treating yourself to a massage. Yes, you’ll have to take another shower afterwards to remove the excess oil or gel, but hot water on your body will also help relax your muscles. (3) Arrive in advance. Arriving 5 minutes before your massage will allow you to take a moment to go to the restroom or have a glass of water if need be. (4) Communicate your needs. Tell your therapist everything: your preferences, needs, expectations, and so on. Please let your therapist know if you want them to pay special attention to one part of your body or to avoid a specific area. Let them know how much pressure you enjoy. Let them know what you don’t enjoy. The more you communicate your needs, the better your therapist will be able to respond to them. (5) Relax.

Do I have to be completely undressed? What do you wear for a massage?

Disrobe to your level of comfort but remember the more you have one the more restricted the massage will be. Many people prefer to keep their underwear on during a massage, while others choose to be nude. Your massage therapist will leave the room so you can undress and lie on the massage table under a top sheet. Regardless of what you choose to do your massage therapist will always ensure that you are always properly covered.

How often should I get a massage?

Individual preference varies, so for most it depends on your pain, physical needs, emotional needs, and of course, budget. Receiving a massage regularly has the most benefit; this can be as often as weekly or monthly. If you live an active lifestyle or you are constantly dealing with migraine headaches from weekly or biweekly is recommended.

Will the massage hurt?

Massages should not hurt. In fact, if you are in pain during a massage, this may cause your muscles to seize up, making the relaxing effects more difficult to achieve. If the pressure is too intense, speak up immediately so the therapist can adjust pain during or after your massage.

Why do I have to pay a deposit?

Unfortunately, there are many cases where a potential client will make an appointment for a massage session, but then canceled at the very last minute. The $20 deposit ensures that therapist’s time is valued and that the therapist is compensated for that missed session.

Can I get a refund?

There are no refunds. A client can reschedule a massage session without an additional $20 deposit if the client calls 24 hours before appointment. If the client does not comply, the deposit will be forfeited.

How much do you tip for a massage?

The standard tipping rate for a massage is 20%. So, for a $50 massage, you can tip $10. You can increase or lower your tip depending on how satisfied you are with their services.

When should I avoid getting a massage?

In general, there are a few conditions that would prevent you from getting a massage. Of course, do not schedule an appointment if you are feeling unwell, have a fever, cold, or a skin condition that is contagious. The first trimester of pregnancy is generally considered off-limits for massage, as are active chemotherapy or other intensive medical treatments. If you have a serious medical condition and you are unsure if a massage would be safe for you, massage therapists will recommend that you speak with your primary care provider to get approval first.

What if I have body acne, skin conditions, bad nails, or forgot to shave?

Rest assured; massage therapists have seen it all! Please do not feel uncomfortable or embarrassed. Your massage therapist is focused on creating a relaxing and therapeutic experience for you, and you cannot relax if you are anxious about your body’s appearance. If anything, your therapist may be able to make product or technique recommendations to help alleviate any conditions that may be bothersome to you.
